About

My name is Megan and I am a full time student and soon to be mom, studying Sustainable Food and Farming at The University of Massachusetts.  I have been thinking about starting a blog for some time now to delve into and share my interests and passions with the world but finally got the motivation that, I guess, I needed to do so.

Part of the motivating factor is that while I am out of school on maternity leave I will be doing a homesteading work experience here at our wonderful homestead and will be receiving credit for this time based partly on my blogging about all the gardening, food preservation, raising chickens and a baby, while starting a very small scale farming enterprise from our lovely garden.  Now that I am out of work and school temporarily to bring our beautiful baby girl into the world, I really have the time to focus on our homestead and all that it entails.

I will not only be writing about the obligatory topics to receive credit for the next semester, even though I find them truly fascinating, but also about my new experience as a mom and full time care taker of our home.  Other topics may include wild crafting, do it yourself projects, environmental issues and tips on sustainability, herbalism and natural health alternatives, and gluten free cooking and baking tips and recipes.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2006 and live a completely gluten free lifestyle, although my partner still loves bringing home non gluten free food from time to time, so as close as you can get to it given that the world around us is definitely not on the same page.  So I am sure that there will be many things posted about this topic and what it may mean for our little girl.

One great thing that came out of my diagnosis, besides feeling a heck of a lot better, was that I was forced to start reading food labels constantly to make sure it was safe for me to eat and use.  This really got me questioning just what the hell they are putting in our food these days and sparked my interest in real food and all the components of the industrial food system and the implications to our environment.

I am well aware that not everyone shares these passions and that most people just think I'm a crazy hippy for totally changing my career path as a hair stylist to full time student and my way of life to support and live more in tune with these new found beliefs but honestly I don't really care about what the nay say-ers think of me.  I found a partner that, most of the time, agrees and supports my interests and beliefs and has my back on it, allowing me to do all of these glorious things around our home and supporting me through school.

I know that I will not convince everyone to live like we do on our homestead and that some people just aren't interested in hearing about all of these topics but I think it's important to spread awareness and create a learning community and hope that you take a piece of something from my blog, even if it is just a delicious recipe or quick tip.
